Turmeric & Curcumin

Discover the differences between whole turmeric, turmeric extract and 95% curcumin extract, and why we use all three.

For centuries, turmeric has been used in traditional cooking and wellness practices. Not all turmeric ingredients are the same as whole turmeric root powder, turmeric extract & curcumin extract each offer something different.

The Basics

Understanding Turmeric & Curcumin

Turmeric vs Curcumin

People often use the terms turmeric and curcumin interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Turmeric is the whole root, while curcumin is one of the naturally occurring compounds found within it.

Turmeric

Turmeric is the orange-yellow root of the Curcuma longa plant. It naturally contains hundreds of plant compounds, including a group called curcuminoids.

Curcumin

Curcumin is the most abundant and widely researched curcuminoid found within turmeric. It is responsible for turmeric's distinctive golden colour and is the best-known active compound found in the root.

Whole Turmeric Powder

Made by drying and finely grinding the whole turmeric root. It contains the plant's naturally occurring compounds in their original proportions and typically contains around 5% curcuminoids.

Turmeric Extract

A concentrated form of turmeric produced by extracting selected compounds from the root. It provides higher levels of curcuminoids than whole turmeric powder.

95% Curcumin Extract

A highly concentrated extract standardised to contain 95% curcuminoids, providing much higher levels of curcumin than whole turmeric or standard turmeric extract.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is turmeric the same as curcumin?

Why not just use turmeric powder?

Whole turmeric naturally contains relatively low amounts of curcumin. Combining different forms allows us to create a more complete formula.

Why do you use 95% curcumin extract?

Standardising curcumin extract to 95% provides a concentrated source of curcuminoids, the compounds most commonly studied in scientific research.

Why do I usually see black pepper with turmeric?

Black pepper contains piperine, which has been shown to enhance the absorption of curcumin by up to 2,000%.

Can I take turmeric every day?

When taken as directed, turmeric supplements are commonly used as part of a daily wellness routine. Always follow the recommended serving and consult a healthcare professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition.
